The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
